Early detection. Ongoing care.

Glaucoma

Your sight deserves a closer look. Regular eye examinations help detect glaucoma before you notice a change in your vision.

Glaucoma often develops without early warning signs.

Understanding the condition

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that cause progressive damage to the optic nerve, often due to increased pressure inside the eye. Known as the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma disease typically develops slowly and without noticeable symptoms in the early stages. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss.

Because of its gradual nature, regular eye exams are crucial for early detection and ongoing glaucoma management.

Know what to watch for

Glaucoma Symptoms: What to Watch For

In the early stages, glaucoma may not present any obvious symptoms. As the disease progresses, individuals may experience:

  • Loss of peripheral (side) vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye pain or redness (in acute cases)
  • Halos around lights
  • Sudden vision loss (rare but serious)

If you notice any of these signs, or have a family history of glaucoma, it is important to book an eye examination with an optometrist as soon as possible.

How is Glaucoma Diagnosed?

A closer look at your eye health.

At Spectacle Hub, we use advanced diagnostic technology to detect signs of glaucoma early.

Your optometrist will carry out a comprehensive assessment, which may include:

  • 01Eye pressure measurement
  • 02Optic nerve examination
  • 03OCT imaging
  • 04Visual field testing
Early detection. Care tailored to you.

These tests are non-invasive and completely painless. Our goal is to catch glaucoma before vision loss begins and create a tailored plan for long-term care.

Glaucoma Treatment Options

While glaucoma cannot be cured, early diagnosis and consistent glaucoma treatment can slow or prevent further vision loss. Treatment options vary depending on the type and severity of the condition:

Prescription Eye Drops

Drops can reduce fluid production or improve drainage to lower pressure. Use them as prescribed and tell your clinician about any side effects.

Oral Medications

In selected cases, tablets may be prescribed to help control eye pressure, sometimes alongside drops.

Laser Therapy

Laser treatments, such as selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), are often used to improve fluid drainage and manage intraocular pressure.

Surgical Options

For more advanced cases, surgery may be necessary to create a new drainage path for eye fluid. These procedures are usually performed by a specialist ophthalmologist.

If required, we will refer you to a trusted glaucoma ophthalmologist in Melbourne or Geelong for ongoing care. You can learn more about treatment options through the Glaucoma Australia website.
