Understanding AMD

What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a chronic eye disease that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It is the leading cause of blindness in Australians over the age of 50.

There are two main types of AMD:

  • Dry AMD, the more common form, progresses slowly and leads to gradual vision loss.
  • Wet AMD, the more serious type, can cause sudden and severe central vision loss due to abnormal blood vessel growth beneath the retina.

Early diagnosis is critical. With timely intervention, Macular Degeneration treatment can significantly slow progression and help preserve sight.

Care tailored to the type and stage

Macular Degeneration Treatment and Management

While there is currently no cure for AMD, several treatment options are available to manage the condition and protect your vision:

Lifestyle Modifications

Stopping smoking, staying active and eating a balanced diet can support eye health. Your clinician can discuss practical changes and general health factors with you.

Nutritional Supplements

AREDS2 supplements may benefit some people with particular stages of AMD. They are not suitable for everyone; ask your eye care professional before starting them.

Anti-VEGF Injections

For wet AMD, specialist treatment with intravitreal injections can stop abnormal blood vessel growth and prevent further vision loss. If needed, we will refer you to a trusted ophthalmologist for this care.

Monitoring and Ongoing Care

We provide regular check-ups, visual acuity assessments, and education to help patients understand and manage their condition confidently.
